Coaching Background

I am UESCA certified in Running, Ultrarunning, and Endurance Sports Nutrition. I help athletes optimize performance, dial in nutrition, avoid injury, build strength, and hone their mental game. I coach runners across all distances and surfaces but specialize in mountains, trails, and ultras. I have successfully coached hundreds of runners to finishes at a wide range of races around the world.

Coach Will’s Athletic Background

I bring deep athletic experience to my coaching. I have raced competitively for 17+ years in over 100 marathons and ultramarathons with multiple podium and top 10 finishes. I have a particularly strong background in mountainous trail races, from shorter distances all the way to 100 and 200 mile races.

  • 16x 100-mile finishes (4x UTMB - 28 hours / 72nd place / 3rd American man, 3x Hellbender 100 - 2nd and 3rd, Bighorn 100 - 9th, Cruel Jewel - 8th, Grindstone, Canyons, Vermont, HURT)

  • 2x Tor des Geants finisher (28th Overall in 2024), 4th place at the Southern States 200

  • Numerous ultras around the world (Trail Verbier 111km, Sean O’Brien 100km, Hellgate 100km, Gran Trail Courmayeur 105km, Val d’Aran 105km)

  • 13x Marine Corps Marathon, Boston Marathon, Philly Marathon (multiple sub 3-hours)

Coaching Philosophy

I firmly believe that we are capable of much more than we think. Athletes can achieve audacious goals they would not have thought possible. With smart training and consistency, you have the potential to improve beyond your wildest dreams.

I take a holistic approach - running well is about more than following a workout plan. Area of focus and values that define my coaching include:

Smart & Structured Training: optimized, periodized, and scientific-based to help you train smarter not harder, improve performance, and stay healthy

Backed by Data & Science: a data-driven and science backed approach, informed by my previous 17-year career in data science and analytics

Focus on Strength Training: specific and customized strength workouts to improve performance and avoid injury

Honing Mental Skills: advice and coaching to build mental strength and resilience

Dialing in Nutrition: optimize day-to-day and during-event nutrition, informed by my Endurance Nutrition Certification and continual ongoing research

Expertise w/ Mountains, Trails, & Ultras: optimize training, gear, logistics, nutrition, and mental preparation for mountains, trails and ultras

Personal Connection: frequent communication to get to know you and build a strong relationship

Long-Term & Balanced: focus on long-term success vs. short-term results, balancing training with work, family, and other aspects of life

I coach athletes for all distances and ability levels, from those looking to land on the podium to those looking to finish a new challenge.

Jade Graham

I am a United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy (UESCA) certified running coach with experience helping athletes with different goals and backgrounds from preparing for a personal best 5k to crushing a first ultra distance endurance race. I enjoy working with adult athletes of all ages and take a holistic approach to tailoring training, recovery, and race planning to an individual's lifestyle requirements and goals. I am comfortable working with athletes who are beginning their running journey to advanced athletes looking to improve their performance and take on ambitious new challenges.

I value strength training, worked as a CrossFit coach intern, and have a strong foundational knowledge for coaching fundamental strength movements. I believe that a multi-dimensional athlete has a deeper well to draw from in sport and therefore emphasize work-life balance, flexibility, and cross-training to support an individual's unique needs while encouraging athletes to cultivate values of consistency, resilience, and self-compassion.

I began my running journey as a road runner. Since college, I've competed at distances from 5k to the marathon and qualifying for the Boston marathon. Now, I primarily focus on trail running and compete in ultramarathons from the 50k to 100 mile distance. In 2024, I won the women's race at the Terrapin Mountain 50k and placed 8th female and first in my age group at the HOKA Canyons 100 Mile Endurance Race in Auburn, California, qualifying me to compete in the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France in 2025. I have podiumed in various other trail and ultra races.

Charles Cai

Athletics has been a lifelong passion for me. Through high school, I ran cross country, track/field, and played golf. I was fortunate enough to be recruited for golf, where I competed for Dartmouth College and was a 4 year letter winner and senior year captain while earning second team all-Ivy honors.

When my collegiate career ended I discovered endurance sports as a way to fill the competitive void. I completed my first Ironman 70.3 in 2018 and shortly after finished my first marathon. I eventually found ultrarunning as the perfect activity to blend my love of fitness with my love of adventure. Helping others achieve their goals and develop a love of running keeps me motivated as a coach. As a data scientist like Will, I believe in taking a methodical approach when it comes to training, nutrition, and race planning, while being flexible and adapting when life inevitably gets in the way. I have worked with athletes training for their first half marathon, all the way to completing 100k ultramarathons. My personal accomplishments include top 25 at the 2023 Leadville 100 (22:31), multiple podium finishes at Tahoe Rim Trail 55k, Dick Collins Firetrails 50, and a sub 3 marathon (2:54)

When I am not coaching or mountain running I enjoy reading, playing pickleball, and skiing in the mountains.

Testimonials

I've been working with Will this past year as I wanted to make the move from casual distance runner to an ultramarathon trail runner. Before working with Will, I was averaging around 30 miles per week with no experience trail running. Since our time working together, Will has helped me slowly ramp up to 60-70 miles a week with a large portion of that on the trails while staying injury free. With this kind of mileage, there's so much that goes into staying healthy and continuing to improve - and Will is knowledgeable in all aspects. From sending me stretching and strength training exercises to incorporate throughout the week, to providing guidance on nutrition both during runs and while recovering, to offering advice on running form and technique while running on the trails, Will has made me so much more knowledgeable and a complete runner.

CHARLES, 2ND PLACE DICK COLLINS FIRETRAILS 50, TOP 10 MIWOK 100K

I have been working with Will now for over 8 months. I wanted a coach that specialized in ultramarathon trail mountain races that could help me excel and train specifically for the Val d’Aran PDA 55k mountain race in the Pyrenees mountains in Spain. Since Will previously ran the Val d’Aran and UTMB, I felt he would be a perfect fit for my coaching needs. Will customized a program that incorporated race specific workouts that enabled me to build strength, stamina, and confidence out on the trails and in the mountains. He also incorporated running specific strength workouts, and provided race nutrition and hydration advice that aided in my success in training runs and races. Will is very experienced, knowledgeable, and always available to answer any questions to assist in my success. He is a gem of a coach if you are looking to step up your game in road and mountain races!

MICHELLE, AGE GROUP WINNER AT CANYONS 50K and VAL D’ARAN PDA FINISHER

I went looking for a ultramarathon coach because I wanted to add mileage and get faster in preparation for my first 100 miler. Will seemed like a great fit given his extensive ultra experience over all distances. In just 9 months, I was able to add about 15 miles per week to my average weekly mileage and double the amount of weekly vert I could handle. In addition to developing strong training programs, Coach Will was very communicative, giving feedback on each run, cross training, or strength training session he prescribes. We even linked up for a number of long runs given that I was local. I always felt that I could describe my day-to-day fluctuations with running and Will was there to provide guidance. With Will’s coaching (and pacing!), I was able to run the Western States 100 in a time I am proud of. If you are looking for a coach, I highly recommend Will!
